Risky Play

by Ben Bell May 12, 2014 A

At The Land children climb trees, light fires and use hammers and nails in a play-space rooted in the belief that kids are empowered when they learn to manage risks on their own.

The Land, a Welsh “adventure” playground is the subject of a forthcoming documentary about the nature of play, risk and hazard, and I’m really looking forward to watching it.

Watching the trailers for the film I was reminded of an excellent Grove booklet on the subject of risk taking in youth work written by Arthur Brown. In it youth workers are invited to take the risk of allowing our perceptions to be challenged by young people. children and young people have much to teach us about risk taking which can often result in creative solutions and new perspectives.
